In terms of its current scientific productivity, the University of Georgia, Tbilisi leads all the private universities and most of the state universities in the Caucasus region, which includes the countries of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
The relevant data covers the largest open scientific database Google Scholar, as well as the largest curated scientific database – Scopus – which is widely used by leading international University Ranking systems, such as the Times Higher Education ranking and QS ranking.
As shown on the webometrics.org in terms of its Openness Rank (which reflects the citedness of a university’s scholars), the University of Georgia, Tbilisi (UG) is currently in the top 3,000 globally, at the 2,974th place. This rank puts UG above all the private universities of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Among the state universities, in terms of the Google Scholar ranking UG only trails three Georgian (Ilia State, Tbilisi State and Georgian Technical University) and One Armenian University (Yerevan State). At the same time, UG leads all the other state universities of Georgia and Armenia, including Tbilisi State Medical University and Batumi State University, as well as all the state universities of Azerbaijan – Baku State University being the highest-ranked among them, at the 3,235th place.
In terms of its Excellence Rank – which reflects the amount of top-cited articles attributed to a university’s researchers within the exclusive Scopus database – UG again leads all the private universities of Georgia, as well as all the universities of Armenia (including the state ones), and all but three universities of Azerbaijan (2 state and 1 private). UG is ranked 3,551th globally, which only trails 6 out of 158 universities in the entire Caucasus region – Tbilisi State, Ilia State, Georgian Technical, Azerbaijan University, Baku State, and Azerbaijan State University of Economics.
UG is thus ranked higher in terms of its top-cited Scopus articles than such long-standing, influential regional universities, as the Tbilisi State Medical, Batumi State University, Free University, Yerevan State Medical, American University of Armenia, Khazar University, and Azerbaijan Medical University, among many others.
Overall, out of the 158 universities of the Caucasus region included in the Webometrics database, UG is 5th in terms of its Openness Rank (Google Scholar profiles) and 7th in terms of its Excellence Rank (top cited Scopus Articles), putting it firmly within the top 5% in the region.
UG’s Openness Rank (2,974) also falls within the top 10% globally, as the database covers about 32,000 universities.
